牛车水，一个大多数新加坡人都熟悉的地方， 尤其是较为年长的一辈。也是很多旅客到访的地方。
移居新加坡已有二十年的我很少到牛车水去。 通常， 只有在几种情况下才会到那儿去 – 带从外国到访的亲戚朋友去逛逛、去买林志源的肉干或是去买布料或做耳环的用料。
最近， 住在纽西兰的侄子到访，小住了一个星期。 侄子（各10岁和8岁）因在洋人的环境下成长与学习，对于华语和方言，甚至华人的风俗习惯都一窍不通。正逢农历新年即将到来， 我决定带他们到牛车水走一趟。除了让他们感染一下农历新年的气息，也希望能让他们对牛车水以及一些华人的习俗有些认识。
花了一个下午在牛车水， 我们除了享用了好吃的点心午餐、逛年货市场外，也参观了位于宝塔街的原貌馆，了解了牛车水的历史和早期移民们的生活点滴。
